The Abbey of Herkenrode is located in Kuringen, a district of the
city of Hasselt.
The abbey was founded around 1182 by Gerard, Count of Loon.
From the twelfth-century monastery not much is preserved: the
base of the mill on the Demer river dates from that early
stage. The
buildings
still visible today are all from the
16th-18th century, this includes the monumental gate building,
the water mill at the Bottom, the Infirmerie (hospital), the farm
buildings,
the tithe barn and the residences of abbesses.
One of the many products of the Herkenrode Abbey is the Herkenrode
Tripel. It is recognized as a genuine "Belgian Abbey beer".
