Diksmuide is an agricultural and farming community, next to the IJzer
river, located in the Westhoek in West Flanders in Belgium.
In the 7th century
was still
Diksmuide right at the North Sea beach.
Diksmuide had suffered severely during the First World War and had to
be completely rebuilt. A remnant from that period, the infamous Killing
Gang, one of the most dangerous trenches of the Belgian army.
The
IJzertoren, a peace monument, recalls the sufferings of war.
Other witnesses of the First World War in Diksmuide are the Keiem Belgian
military cemetery and the German military cemetery at Vladslo with
the famous statues of Käthe Kollwitz: The grieving parents.
