GFA
International Convention and Competition 2008
San Francisco, CAL
August 5-10, 2008
For the first time in many years, the GFA Convention will meet in the
summer.
The beautiful new facilities at the San Francisco Conservatory will be
used for the competition and the evening concerts, and the elegant and
classic San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, a few blocks
away, will serve as the central location for most of the daytime activities.
Both facilities are located in the heart of beautiful downtown San Francisco.
Raphaella Smits is invited to serve as member of the jury for the semi-finals
(August 08) and the finals (August 10) of the
GFA Competition.
Besides that she will give some
masterclasses
(August 07) and an
afternoon recital (August 09).
More information about the Guitar Foundation of America, the Convention,
the magazine Soundboard or many other related items: check the
GFA website.
Some comments on Raphaella's participation at the GFA Convention 2005
in Oberlin, OH:
"I've seen many fine classical guitarists in concert, but, for me,
Raphaella is the most memorable. If you have a chance to see her perform,
please do so. You won't regret it." John E. Golden
"I am in awe of her technique, but more so with her interpretation,
use of dynamics, and musical skills. I hear a supreme control of each
note played and weaving of voices by her Royal Highness." E.S.
“I love this woman and her great artistry and her concert was made
in heaven as she stunned the audience with her magical qualities of music
making and execution.” Don Witter jr.
“She captivated much of her audience, not only with the music itself,
but with her expressive playing. … Spellbinding much of the audience
with each piece, she generated a thunderous applause and call for an encore,
which she obliged.” Christina Krotzer
“There are not enough words adequate to describe the wonder of Raphaella
Smits. There are a few exceptional people who radiate a light of their
own. Raphaella is one of them. … I had heard recordings by Raphaella,
but hearing and seeing her in live personal performance was truly an overwhelming
experience, a highlight of my life.” Irma Wassall
