In het center of Ghent you can find the Kouter, a gorgious sqare with 19th century façades, a renovated music kiosque and a contemporary art work ‘The Mystic Leaves’ from the American artist Jessica Diamond.

Next to the bank buildings and the restaurants, at number 29, shows up the stately building of the Handelsbeurs. This monument, built in 1738 by architect David ’t Kindt, was the Corps de Garde (the main guardhouse) of the Austrian Imperial Guards.

At the end of the 19th century it accommodated a telephone- and telegraph office, and at the beginning of the 20th century the city government merged the building with the neighbouring Clubhouse l’Union to create the municipal Handelsbeurs (trading estate).

At the beginning of the 21st century the Handelsbeurs was obtained by the Noordstarfonds. After a thorough restoration the Handelsbeurs became a cultural venue with a lovely concert hall.
