Damme lies within a stone's throw from Bruges. It is a pictureque little
city with a rich history.
The direct accessibility to the sea granted Damme (and places like Bruges,
Sluis, Aardenburg and others) a mediaeval period of economic prosperity.
The gradual silting-up blocked the ships since the 15th century. Later
the region was frequently the batllefield for wars between Engeland and
France, Spain and the Netherlands, to finaly be absorbed by the Austrian,
and later the French empires.
The most famous people of Damme were by far Thyl Ulenspiegel, Nele and
Lamme Goedzak. Depending on the origin of the story Thyl was a joker making
fun of everyone and everything, or he was a popular hero helping the Geuzen
(the Beggars), a confederacy of nobles and other malcontents, who in 1566
opposed Spanish rule.
Today Damme is an peaceful oasis with 745 residents that will welcome
